Tokyo, November 30, 2018 — Hitachi Automotive Systems, Ltd. today announced that shipments of its air flow sensors (AFS), which it produces and sells to automakers and on the automotive aftermarket, exceeded a cumulative total of 300 million units this month.
Air flow sensors are automotive components that measure the amount of engine intake air, and thereby optimize engine fuel injection amounts. As environmental regulations become more rigorous around the world, air flow sensors not only improve fuel efficiency but also contribute to reductions in CO2 emissions and other exhaust gases; as such, they are positioned as core components in internal combustion engines.
In 1981, Hitachi Automotive Systems became one of the first companies to mass-produce hot wire air flow sensors* for gasoline engines. On the back of growing market demand, the company subsequently expanded its product line-up, launching an air filter-mounted air flow sensor in 1996, and releasing a multi-functional air flow sensor in 2011 that is both resistant to contamination and capable of accurate humidity measurement. Hitachi Automotive Systems has continued to steadily increase air flow sensor shipment volumes, and in November 2018, exceeded a cumulative total of 300 million units.
Hitachi Automotive Systems’ air flow sensors incorporate highly accurate sensing technologies necessary in engine powertrain systems, and are widely recognized by automakers in Japan and around the world. Moving forward, through the development of sensing components that utilize its expertise in electronics technologies, Hitachi Automotive Systems will continue to lead the automotive components industry.
* A hot wire air flow sensor measures the amount of air flow. A platinum wire is positioned inside the intake air duct, and heated via an electric current. Since the amount of heat transferred to the air depends on the air flow rate, the sensor is able to measure the amount of air flow.
