Hitachi Contract Driver Josef Newgarden
claims second victory in the IndyCar Series

Tokyo, September 4, 2020 --- Hitachi Automotive Systems, Ltd. is proud to announce that Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden claimed his second victory this season in the 9th race of the IndyCar Series, held at the World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois on Sunday, August 30. Team Penske is sponsored by Hitachi Automotive Systems and the Hitachi Group.

World Wide Technology Raceway is a 1.25 mile (roughly 2km) oval track. Close-quarter engagements frequently unfold on the track, sometimes resulting in exciting and sometimes dangerous conditions for the drivers. With little opportunity to break from the pack, the key to winning on this track is often team strategy, including at the pit stop.

Newgarden started the race in second position on the grid. While keeping his spot as one of the frontrunners from start to finish, Newgarden did not forcibly aim for the top spot, but instead focused on skillfully controlling his car to maintain tire grip performance. The team performed flawlessly during the 3 tire changes, and in the 157th lap, after all machines had completed a routine pit stop, Newgarden separated himself from the pack until reaching the flag in first place to claim his second victory this season. With this victory, Newgarden has kept his 2nd place standing in the annual championships. With his eyes set on the championship title, he will charge full speed ahead in the remaining races.

Hitachi Automotive Systems is a proud sponsor of Team Penske and Josef Newgarden.

Smooth sailing: Newgarden’s machine leading the pack
