The Role of High-definition Maps in AD/ADAS
High-definition maps are one of the key components for making smooth running AD/ADAS vehicles.
They serve two key roles, (1) inference and (2) prediction. Each supports smooth driving by supplementing vehicle sensors.
-
(1) Inference
- Avoids inability to ascertain the road surface due to obstacles around the vehicle
- Supplements driving on no-lane sections of road and unclear road paint markings (lane boundaries)
- Supplements in the event of vehicle sensor malfunctions
-
(2) Prediction
- Makes predictions beyond the sensing range of vehicle sensors
The Role of High-definition Maps

Difficulty in Producing High-definition maps
Although it is necessary to update maps frequently to maintain the accuracy of high-definition maps, it is difficult to expand road coverage due to the cost of maintenance and updating. When considering the implementation of AD/ADAS functions on all roads where ordinary cars can drive, it will be necessary to develop and update high-definition maps using different approaches and methods.
