Nguyen, Quality Control Department Leader, Vietnam
I manage the incoming materials section in the quality control department of Hitachi Astemo Hanoi. Our team has the responsibility for carefully evaluating the quality of incoming materials that will be used to assemble our finished products. This also involves working with our supplier community every day on quality improvement activities.
By focusing on quality improvement activities and waste reduction we conserve materials. For example, we work with our suppliers to develop action plans to reduce scrap waste. This involves quality-audit visits to our suppliers’ manufacturing facilities. We offer training and guidance so they can identify and implement quality-management solutions. I enjoy this problem-solving aspect of my role that helps both our supplier community and Hitachi Astemo conserve precious resources.

All three values are necessary in my quality role. However, sincerity is most important as I carefully evaluate the quality of the incoming materials. This value says that we must act with a sense of ownership, take responsibility for our work and decisions, and also must be fair and honest at all times. This is important in my role while maintaining harmony with our supplier partners.
My job is to collaborate with different suppliers who manufacture a variety of parts and materials. I work with people of different nationalities and company cultures every day. We need to listen and collaborate together, embracing diversity in a respectful and inclusive environment, sympathising with our partners.
I most enjoy meeting and working with our customers and suppliers whom we call our value partners. It is an amazing experience to work in a large company that is made up of small talented teams, such as the quality team I belong to. I have been able to build up my experience and knowledge through this collaboration.
For example, we began a relationship with a new overseas supplier to provide components for a front fork assembly. In the beginning, we faced many difficulties with high scrap waste. This was during the COVID-19 pandemic which also created many obstacles in problem-solving. Through our team’s best effort, we developed an action plan and held virtual meetings with this supplier to offer guidance regarding potential quality improvement actions. Two months later, the scrap waste was reduced to target levels. This was a great team effort and everyone benefited.
